Highlights and Cast Shadows
Do you want to paint better? Learn how to make your objects turn in space, gain volume and weight, be filled with light
Make nightlights that glimmer and look real. Lets look at why cool shadows need to heat up and why warm highlights need to actually cool down.
Learn to separate the transparent shadow from the actual object itself and to paint convincing cast shadows that makes the objects look heavy.
Still life provided.
Materials
Canvases or panels or wood: 14x18 inches or 16x20m inches.
Brushes-small to medium, one larger brush- flats, brights filberts.
Small, round brushes for pulling lines and thin, long paint.
Paint colors
Titanium white
Zinc white
Lemon yellow
Cad yellow
Cad orange
Napthol red
Alizarin Crimson
Ultramarine blue
Thalo or Prussion blue
Viridian green
Yellow ochre
Raw umber
Burnt umber

EXAMPLE OF SHADOWS AND HIGHLIGHTS
ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM
What is Abstract Expressionism?
We will learn to use color with structural power.
Working from nature; i.e. that which is observable, learn to make it your own by adding your own voice to what you see.
We will discover the difference between traditional painting and abstract expressionism and how this movement turned the understanding of painting on its head. AND this is something that Rembrandt and Michaelangelo already understood.
This is a comprehensive, two-day workshop beginning with black/white and moving into color.
Materials List
Day 1 Monochrome
White paper (or several white canvases)
Choices of:
Vine charcoal
Charcoal
Pencils
Black or dark pastels or oils sticks
Black/white paint of your choosing.
Appropriate rags, containers for water or mineral spirits if painting.
Fixative
Day 2 Color
Paper, canvases, any surface you want.
Keep the color simple today
One warm, one cool, one dark neutral and a light neutral.
Pastes, colored pencils, crayons, paint, colored paper, glue.
Bring what you want and what you have.
There is no need to spend much at all for these materials.
Theory, history and practical application.
(Friendly) Critiques, demos and lectures.
